Research - Mental Health Promotion
Researching mental public health including mental health stigma.
Stigma surrounding suicide and mental-ill health poses a large burden to the community and is one of the most important barriers to help-seeking for mental health problems. Research on how to reduce stigma surrounding mental ill-health and suicide has been at the core of some of the work of the Wiener Werkstaette. Specifically, we have contributed to the development of the first set of media guidelines for the stigma-free reporting on mental health and mental illness in Austria. Further, we are involved in research to assess which media portrayals can contribute to a reduction of stigma of help-seeking and disclosing mental health problems. Further, we are involved in research examining the complex relationship between suicide stigma, suicidal ideation, and to support the normalization of help-seeking. Some of the research also targets specific minorities such as LGBTIQ+ individuals, in order to better understand how to tailor suicide prevention and mental health messaging for specific groups.
